Hundreds left without power as Port goes dark
Ergon Energy have confirmed a majority of customers have had their power returned with just 68 properties still in the dark as of 1pm today.
The electricity provider confirmed the outage was caused by damage sustained by an underground power cable.
"The outage was caused by an underground cable fault," a spokesperson for Ergon said.
"We have brought generation in from Cairns to restore temporary supply while crews do emergency repairs."
It is expected all residences in Port Douglas will have their power returned within a few hours.
Port Douglas has woken to a disrupted power supply with Ergon Energy crews working to fix the fault.
The initial outage saw 714 customers lose supply at around 5am today but Ergon have confirmed they have restored power to most customers in the area.
According to Ergon, there were still 73 customers in Port Douglas without a power supply as of 8.23am.
A spokesperson from Ergon Energy said they are in the process of investigating the cause of the outage and will restore power as they go.
“Our crews have to check the feeder supply section by section to find the fault and they are restoring power to each section as they go.”
“We are working to get the majority of customers back on as it is safe to do so.”
The cause of the power outage is unknown and it remains unclear when power will be fully restored to the town.
Some businesses in Port Douglas have been forced to delay opening due to a lack of power supply.
