A new field hockey competition is building in the Douglas Shire and residents young and old are being encouraged to join in.

The sport has been brought to the region by now Chairman of the Douglas Hockey Association, Greg Mill, who has a long history with field hockey.

“I’ve coached and played hockey at high levels of competition, including on an international stage,” he said.

“I’ve played and coached hockey in the UK, in South Africa, and all through Australia as well as coaching in Cairns for two years, leading teams there to a premiership.”

Now, Mr Mill has been working hard to bring field hockey to the Douglas Shire and is ready to launch an inter-school competition as well as an adults league and senior’s competition.

“I took a year off from hockey in the first year I moved up here but like all sports people, I got itchy feet,” he said.

“I didn’t want to drive to Cairns every day so I looked at opportunities in Douglas Shire and found there was no hockey at all and I felt Douglas Shire was missing out.

“So, I contacted every school from Julatten to Alexandra bay, met with all the principals in about September last year, and outlined a proposition to start a hockey competition from prep to grade six.

“The principals were ecstatic; they were straight into it.”

The school’s hockey program will feature grade five and six students from schools in the region playing 11-a-side hockey in full competition.

Grade three and four students will play a seven-a-side version of the game also in a competitive environment while preps to grade two students will play social mini hockey games to learn new skills and have fun with the game.

Following a call-out on social media and a successful sign-up day in Mossman last weekend, the Douglas Hockey Association has grown and about 100 people outside the schools have registered their interest in joining in on the sport.

The school’s tournament is ready to launch this year with most of the schools in the region on board and an adults league is growing in numbers by the day.

The Douglas Hockey Association offers adults mixed-gender field hockey as well as walking hockey for older people and people living with a disability who are looking for new ways to stay fit and healthy.

The adult competition is well underway to launch later this year when the cooler months offer more favourable playing conditions.
