Most people living here are involved in tourism in some way. We depend on tourism for business and employment for our families. Over recent times there has been a decline in tourism and it has become increasingly more difficult for school leavers to find work and that means having to move away to the cities and breaking up families. This wonderful project will give a huge boost to the area and help many families see a future for our children and grandchildren.

I can't believe the ney sayers here - Port Douglas is falling down around it's ears - it's stuffed! It is not, or, has not been a "little fishing village" since the 80's when we saw the same uproar when Skase came in and put the place on the map - it was the jewel in the crown of north queensland that attracted movie stars, rock stars, US Presidents and international tourists alike. The local tourism trade has been in decline for years and a lot of operators have closed. The people commenting from far off places have no idea how much the area needs capital injection right now. Don't look a gift horse in the mouth!

I’m not going to lie it does look nice however I strongly believe that it does not suit the wonderful tropical small town atmosphere of Port Douglas. I live in Hong Kong which is a huge city and come to Port Douglas every winter. I always find it so refreshing to find myself in this cozy small town community where it’s more calm and close to its natural roots. This development projects the exact opposite, not only will it bring hundreds of people flocking around PD ruining the calm relaxing atmosphere but it also disfigures the place. It is just huge block of cement. This is not what people come to Port Douglas for.

Would like to see a Gary Hunt design... I’m sure he would back a lagoon. A free flow from town to a lagoon, past our amazing restaurants then to the Marina...I’m all for the development let’s hope it compliments the towns landscape and people

I hope this picture is a mistake made.by the reporter. Otherwise, it is an awful project without any consideration for what is making port douglas unique. I'm leaving in hong kong and when falling in love for PD, it was for his tropical north ambulance, not for a generic type of hotel like this. Hope the council will.reject this project.

All I can see is a major hotel development. Where is the marina? Whilst I support the development in principle, I’m disappointed that it’s a basic uninspiring structure and not one with a more tropical look in keeping with Port Douglas. More pastel colours, wooden beach huts, large open verandas, etc.

Tourists won’t travel from far to tropical PD, then pay good money to stay in a generic resort like that. It’s not leveraging off the town’s advantages over other locations at all. Be wary!

Your article states, "We lack hotel rooms due to such a high level of strata title properties built in the 90’s and beyond." People who come to work during the high season struggle to find somewhere to live because of the LACK of permanent dwellings. Mossman, Cooya and Wonga are looking really good so best you small time investors snap up a bargain in one of these areas before this monstrosity goes ahead.

Some observations on the comments made so far.
1. This proposed development is not a community project. It is an 'at risk' investment being made on land owned by the investor and as such the approval is a matter between council and the applicant.
2. Concrete is a pretty popular building material and has proved quite useful over the last 100 years. Just ask the 3 little pigs.
3. Glass is also a useful building product because you can see through it which helps a lot when it comes to looking outside at the view.
4. The development area includes a large bitumen car park and dilapidated buildings and although some may like these i think the proposal is an improvement.

Really - this does not fit the tropical environmental plan of the Douglas Shire. Isn't the aim of the waterfront plan to have all of the waterfront accessible to the public.....
it is crocodile friendly. People do not come to PD to see concrete. v sad Another plan by an investor who has no long time commitment to the Douglas Shire or the environment.

Does this latest proposal still have an 'underground' (underwater) car park ? ?
The sleepy little village is the major appeal for most visitors from around the world. The quiet simplicity of the location that still shoulders such natural beauties will be destroyed by this piece of cosmetic plastic surgery.

Port Douglas is an icon australian seaside town, not about to have its identity destroyed by a cashed up syrian used car salesman. Despite the threats posted to Julia online you will see in the comments that the majority are against this proposal.

Wow! I am amazed at the simpicistic view the PD has struggled over the last ten years, like that is unusual. 10 years ago we had the GFC and most of us working in FNQ witnessed resorts, dive companies and tourism in general for the region take a massive dive. PDs woes were not for a lack of a Gold Coast style development and it has recovered better than a lot of FNQ. The artist impression looks like a lot of concrete and crocodile pools, inviting.

It looks like it belongs in Dubai, the design is nice, but not tropical at all, all that glass, no big airy verandahs for the setting sun & rain, have you got a plan B.

Well done Crystal and Co. I hope the council work with you to progress to a start date. The marina is now over due for redevelopment. And the town will be the main winners here.
I do understand how some of us locals are nervous of the change it will bring. But change is the only way forward in a stagnated town. Better it be done by a group that has big investment interest in getting it right. Sometimes we just have to sit back and trust.

This kind of development is not appropriate for PD. The town will lose its character and become a tacky tourist resort like those found overseas or Gold Coast.. Who wants to put up with years of the town being a building site while lining the pockets of the super rich ?
NO THANKS TAKE IT ELSEWHERE PLEASE.

Noooooooooooooooo...... although the design looks quite impressive, this will not be in keeping with Port Douglas' tropical/relaxing/care free environment. Please don't destroy the ambience of Port Douglas....by all means build/enhance the Marina but please be mindful of the surrounding area! "NO CONCRETE JUNGLE for PORT DOUGLAS"

I am unable to identify the marina in this image. It seems a perfect example of inappropriate overdevelopment which does not integrate into an existing township. Building a wall of hotels between it and the sea is not an acceptable design.

Wow. This is impressive but it will also change the face of Port Douglas. The old PS will then be gone. I am thankful that we experienced the old PD for 14 years. The rest of the village will then look a bit out of place. Hopefully PD will not lose its soul and hopefully the impact on tourism will be positive enough to compensate. I wish you well, PD.

The whole reason people go to port douglas is that it is not a sea of concrete. Port Douglas has been carefully developed as a town living in a tropical garden. The new design does not fit the setting where are the tropical gardens for the the the resort to live in and also provide shade. Resort needs to be designed with more tropical gardens so it blends in with the rest of port douglas, if you want concrete go to the Gold Coast. It’s the tropical garden village theme that attracts people to port douglas.
Example you go to the beach and see Forrest not concrete.

I think it’s great!! I’m almost a resident..I have family in Port whom I visit regularly..love the place but it definitely needs a boost to its economy and the town could do with more variety for visitors and locals..I hope local residents are employed over transients whist the development is in progress

What a great concept, looks modern, ( you can have a modern tropical look) it will bring employment, create jobs, and give this town a much needed financial boost.
The extra rates money will come to handy too to pay our under achieving

Impressive Concept Design. Thank you to the person who introduced Mr Aboud to Andrew and Chris, former owners. This will be transformative, and should accelerate Waterfront Development Phase through to Rex Smeal Park + Macrossan Street Upgrade.
