A Cooktown man was assaulted with a pick early yesterday morning after a fight with another man escalated to violence.

The older man parked him car and approached the younger man who was standing outside a residence on Hope Street.

Police believe the two men where known to each other.

As the fight escalated, police allege the 29-year-old man grabbed a pick and used it to hit the older man in the head and shoulder.

The 46-year-old ran back to his car and drove to hospital where he was treated for his injuries.

Police were contacted and spoke to the injured man as well as other witnesses.

The injured man was transported to Cairns hospital where he remains in a stable condition.

A short time later, police attended another address where they arrested the 29-year-old man and charged him with unlawful wounding.

The 29-year-old is scheduled to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court today.
