The Douglas and Cook Shire regions have been inundated with rain in the last 24 hours causing road closures and flash flooding around the region.

The Low Isles lighthouse recorded 114mm of rain yesterday and overnight and has recorded 36mm since 9.00am today.

Cooktown recorded 136mm yesterday but has only seen 6.2mm since 9.00am.

Roads in the region, including Cape York, are closed to traffic as the heavy rain swells rivers and washes over bridges.

The Daintree and Mossman rivers are at risk of flooding and moderate flood levels are possible at Daintree Village today

According to the Bureau of Meteorology, although rainfall has eased over the catchment area during the morning, further heavy falls are expected across the weekend.

As of 11.00am, the Daintree River at Daintree Village was at 5.70 metres and rising with river levels expected to reach the moderate flood level of six metres at around midday today.

Elevated river levels are also occurring along the Mossman River with latest observations recording river height at 7.28 metres.
