Three Port Douglas hotels have been voted into the top 10 hotels in Australia by users of travel website TripAdvisor.

The 2019 Travellers’ Choice award winners were based on millions of reviews and opinions collected in 2018 from TripAdvisor travellers worldwide.

Peninsula Boutique Hotel took out the number four spot on the list with their position determined from almost 1,200 individual reviews.

Freestyle Resort came in at number 10, moving down the list from number seven last year, and attracted 850 reviews from TripAdvisor users.

The Lazy Lizard Motor Inn took out the top spot for best bargain accommodation in Australia with 868 reviews.

Owners and managers of the three accommodation businesses were chuffed to receive the awards and all said the response from guests reflects well on Port Douglas as a holiday destination.

Owner of Peninsula Boutique Hotel, Kylie Bartholomew, said the award was a very welcome shock to her and the staff at the hotel.

“We were very surprised but at the same time, we do what we do because we love it so to be recognised and to know people are enjoying the Boutique experience means all our hard work was worth it,” she said.

“It’s really great recognition of our staff’s hard work and nice for them to recognised as well.”

Ms Bartholomew said it’s the hotel’s focus on customer service that allows them to stand out as one of the best in the country.

“We took over the hotel almost two years ago and since then we have acknowledged people enjoy their stay when they have excellent customer service,” she said.

“We don’t treat anyone differently and we make sure all our guests are well taken care of.”

Long-term manager of Freestyle Resort, Jason Moore, said he doesn’t mind being bumped back a few spots on the list to make way for local accommodation businesses.

“We are over the moon to be in the top 10 again and absolutely delighted for Peninsula Boutique to come in at number four,” he said.

“The TripAdvisor awards are all driven by their user reviews and Port Douglas is a such a well recognised and loved destination that we, as a community of hospitality and tourism products, tend to get good reviews from the tourists that come and visit.”

The Lazy Lizard has blitzed all the completion in Australia for bargain accommodation and manager Aidan Mulcahy couldn’t be happier.

“It’s awesome, we work hard to provide a home away from home here and only through feedback can we provide what we do,” he said.

“We are very grateful to our guests that took the time to put up the reviews that led us to getting the award.”

Mr Mulcahy said all the accommodation options in Port Douglas are top-notch and deserve a mention as part of what makes the region great.

“The calibre of accommodation we have here means everyone works together to provide a great service; we are not in competition because we are all doing the same job,” he said.
