Port Douglas locals are encouraged to jump on board a new business in town with a 50 per cent discount on all Green Taxi rides.

The new business is the initiative of Clinton Barter who identified a gap in the Port Douglas transport market.

Mr Barter spent about nine months planning and writing a business case and proposal which has been ticked off by Council and the public transit agency TransLink.

“I would see a lot of people wanting to travel a short distance in town; people would walk out of restaurants after a big meal or a few drinks and not necessarily want to jump in a shuttle,” he said.

“Many tourists are not familiar with the shuttles and would end up walking the length of the street and there were no substitutes to get from A to B in a one or two-kilometre radius of the main street.”

Mr Barter said he wanted to give both visitors and locals a different option for short trips that allowed them to take in the town.

“I think it really suits the area,” he said.

“It’s eco-friendly, it suits the lifestyle up here, and it’s as easygoing as the town is. A really fun way to get around.”

The eco-friendly pedicabs are road compliant and offer trips from Macrossan Street and surrounds all the way to the Palmer Reef Golf course and Millman Drive in Craiglie.

While the business has launched with two cabs, Mr Barter said they have been popular so far and is hoping to introduce two additional cabs in the coming months.

“At the moment we are averaging about 300 people a week and it’s something I want to sustain and keep up and get the locals on board,” he said.

“I want people who live here to know it’s more than just a fun ride, it’s viable option for getting around town.”

Green Taxi currently has two designated pick up points on Macrossan Street, one outside the Courthouse Hotel and one outside Watergate Restaurant.

Locals can take advantage of the 50 per cent discount by signing up for a local’s card online or by speaking to one of the pedicab riders in person.

Check out the Green Taxi website for more info or contact the riders on 0491 604 219 and 0491 603 267.
