Crocs destroy Bulldogs after icy beginning on Saturday
The Port Douglas Crocs hosted their first ever Fight MND Big Freeze event on Saturday in conjunction with celebrating their 30-year anniversary.
The club, with the support of the community, raised about $5,000 for research into motor neurone disease by dunking local people in a big ice bath.
The Crocs Football Operations Manager, Jim Buckley, praised all involved for a great day and dedication to the cause.
“It was a fantastic effort from everyone and such a worthy cause, as many of them are, and was very well supported by both club and community,” he said.
The contest on the field was one-sided with the Crocs smashing the Centrals Trinity Beach Bulldogs by 133 points.
However, Buckley praised the Bulldogs for facing up to the Crocs with a young side.
“It was a comfortable win against a much younger team. The dogs have seven or eight local juniors who I think will do really well in their future,” he said.
“If they can keep those talented kids together they are looking quite promising, but in the end, they got a hiding on the scoreboard and were outdone by us.
“We were quite appreciative of what they did and the talent they have coming through.”
Following the game, the Crocs hosted their 30-year anniversary ball and were joined by players and supporters from the club’s past.
“It feels like we celebrated for three or four days; it was very well supported and it was great to see old faces back and telling stories,” Buckley said.
“I think many stories became exaggerated as the night went on.”
