The Port Douglas Crocs are through to the Cairns AFL Grand Final after clawing their way to a win over the South Cairns Cutters on the weekend.

The Crocs were lethargic in the first quarter and only managed to chalk up eight points to the Cutter’s 22 at the first siren.

It was about halfway through the second quarter that the Crocs lifted their game and managed to almost level out the scores at half time.

It wasn’t until into the third quarter that Port Douglas managed to get ahead of South Cairns and wrestle the game back under control.

The second half completely belonged to the Crocs who went on to win the game by a convincing 55 points.

Adam Gross, Kye Chapple, Ashley Davidson, and Josh Mawson lead the goalkickers while Mckeown, Higgins, and Lea all helped seal the victory in the last quarter.

The Crocs’ Football Operations Manager, Jim Buckley, said the scoreboard was kind to the Crocs and the Cutters should have been further ahead at half time.

“The scoreboard was deceptive; I reckon the first quarter of that game was the worst first-quarter we've played all year,” he said.

“The Cutters were physical and hit us hard and we didn’t respond quickly enough.

“But, Chapple kicked a few big goals late in the send quarter and you could sense the momentum of the game had swung.”

Luckily, despite a hard-fought a physical game, the Crocs reported no injuries and will have a full side to field in a fortnight.

The Crocs will have a week off before the Grand Final next weekend and are yet to find out who they will come up against in the big game.

The Cutters still have a chance to make it the Grand Final if they can defeat the Manunda Hawks at Cazalys Stadium this Saturday.

Buckley said whichever team they match with would be formidable and the Crocs are gad for the week off to recover.

“We will wait and see who we come up against and whoever it is will be a good team,” he said.

“We need the week off. Saturday’s game was very brutal so we will benefit not having the bodily contact for a week.”
