Many residents in the Douglas Shire region may not be aware that they have the power of choice when it comes to their electricity retailer, as until recently, there have been few options.

The Australian owned and operated Bright Spark Power is the regions newest electricity retailer, after launching its Regional Queensland offer across the Douglas Shire on 1 October.

Since then the company says it has fielded an incredible number of enquiries from customers wanting to know if they can get a better deal.

Local support

Now Douglas residents can get those questions answered and compare their electricity bills at a Bright Spark pop up shop in Mossman, where a local representative will be on hand on selected dates.

Simple and straightforward

Bright Spark Power’s Managing Director, Arran Coughlan, says it easy to get started, simply click ‘switch now’ at, enter your address and sign up for your chosen plan in less than five minutes.

Once your order is submitted online, the local support team will take care of everything, including contacting your existing electricity provider and arranging your meter read, so you don’t have to.

The switch occurs without any interruption to your supply so there are no risks. Your electricity supply will remain supported by the same round the clock distributor support.

Port Douglas resident Suzie Hughes recently made the switch.

“As a reasonably high user of residential power, we contacted Bright Spark Power to appraise our situation. The Bright Spark Power representative did a comparison on our previous power bill against what savings we could expect over a full year. Our anticipated saving is in excess of $500,” she said.

“The whole process was professional, efficient and seamless. We would have no hesitation in recommending Bright Spark Power as a credible and affordable alternate provider for your electricity requirements.”

A key difference between the Bright Spark Power market retail contract and regulated pricing, is the lack of confusing fees, leaving customers with just a straightforward daily supply charge and a flat rate per kWh; and the flat rate won’t change under Bright Spark Power’s Best Rate Guarantee, where the price is locked in for 12 months – unless it goes down.

Solving the problem of estimated bills, Bright Spark Power are also offering smart meter installations across the shire.

Mr Coughlan says their focus is creating a clear and simple to understand electricity plan for Douglas Shire residents and business so customers can clearly see what they are paying for.

“We offer a simple, clear, fee structure and Our Best Rate Guarantee, so medium to high use customers can clearly see they may be better off on a market contract with Bright Spark Power, over a regulated plan,” he said.

Bright Spark Power in Business

Unprecedented demand for choice in the area has seen Bright Spark Power launch business plans sooner than expected.

Mr Coughlan said “after launch we had a lot of enquiries from businesses whose main concern is cost certainty, and who only want to pay for the electricity they use, without unnecessary fees.

“As a result, Our Best Rate Guarantee is now available for businesses in the area.”
