Douglas boxers dominate in fight night
SPORT

It was a belter for local Douglas Shire boxers who hammered hard to bring home the hardware from a thrilling fight night in Gordonvale on Saturday.
Cooya Beach boxing club Buzza’s Boxing Gym was represented by three fighters who finished with two wins and one draw in a tough night that tested each boxer.
The club's head coach Danny Buzza, a former super cruiserweight Australian champion with a 10-year pro boxing career behind him, said he was happy with the team’s performance.
“It was a great team effort, I couldn’t be more proud of their efforts. I’m happy to see that the things we practice at training are finally showing in the boxing ring,” elated Mr Buzza.
It was a machine gun effort for ironwoman Megan Newman going toe to toe with former junior champion Kieara Stewart-Rae in a women's lightweight exhibition match.
Newman said she was simply happy to get into the ring after her original opponent didn’t make weigh-in.
The hard-hitting Stewart-Rae came out firing but after weathering the storm Megan began to take herself deeper into the fight, using her inside game and superior conditioning she came back with a hugely impressive execution. The draw came as all exhibition matches are called draws.
“The first round was hectic but then I found my feet and felt really good. It was a really supportive crowd, and the atmosphere was great,” said Megan.

It was back to business for Sunstates 2019 Senior Golden Gloves Champion Lachy Buzza who declared himself ready for return to the ring after a two-year hiatus due to recovery from an unrelated knee injury.
Lachy said it was a tough fight due to being out for two years but his experience allowed him the composure to get the win.
He shook off his ring rust in a convincing two out of three rounds won in a brutal contest against Yungaburra Light heavyweight Joshua Klein.
“I took a fight against a heavier opponent on a couple of hours’ notice due to my other opponent pulling out. The night had plenty of tough hard entertaining fights,” he said.
Klein bolstered his size to rough up the smaller Lachy, however with resolve of grit and heart Lachy conjured up booming rights and left hooks to out punch and power over his larger opponent, by the sound of the final bell the hat tipped in his favour.

Kayne House put another win feather in his hat as he continues to advance in the ‘W’ column. Said to be his best fight yet, Kayne boxed beautifully for two rounds in his lightweight division match-up with Gordonvale boxer Brendan Pengelly.
Things got a tad messy with the desperate Pengelly resorting to roughhouse tactics trying to unsettle Kayne. Composed, Kayne didn’t quit and didn’t fold, which is exactly what is needed to truly develop into a lengthy champion of the sport.
