A local tourism organisation has launched a campaign to attract more local business while Far North Queensland rides out the current border closures that are crippling the Douglas Shire’s economy.

Available to locals and ‘neighbours’, Tourism Port Douglas Daintree has 22 different FNQ experiences that are currently discounted to entice people to ‘Stay Local, Play Local”.

Tourism Port Douglas Daintree CEO Tara Bennett says that the promotion aims to provide a compelling and immediate reason for the local market to holiday here.

“The campaign is titled ‘Everybody Needs Good Neighbours’ and builds on the success of a competition by the same name we ran this time last year to encourage regional travel,” said Bennett.

People from Townsville to Cooktown and anywhere in between are invited to reap the rewards of a discounted experience in any of the selected tours on the Visit Port Douglas Daintree website.

Deals range from snorkelling, adventure and cultural tours right through to dining, spa and accommodation deals and are open to anyone showing ID with a valid North Queensland address.

Welcome Boost

Bennett said that the initial uptake of the promotion has been positive, and the continued support of local tourism outlets provides a much-needed boost for the Douglas Shire economy.

“The campaign has been so strong we will be extending a further two weeks to drive much needed visitation during this quiet period. Every dollar spent locally makes a big difference to businesses who are struggling during this time.

Holiday At Home

Here at Newsport we have partnered with the, Port Douglas Travel Planner, to encourage locals to treat themselves over the next few weeks according to head of communications, Jamie Jansen.

"The Holiday at Home promotion is a special advertising campaign that will be run for the coming weeks on Newsport and the Port Douglas Travel Planner. Port Douglas accommodation operators have been invited to supply a 'once in a lifetime' best local rate or package," Jansen said.

"Some of our exisiting clients asked us to run the promotion because the current lockdowns are having such a huge impact on the industry in Port Douglas and Daintree. We hope to encourage local Douglas Shire residents to come and stay in town or in the Daintree".

Jansen said anyone can go to the Port Douglas Travel Planner website and book their accommodation in Port Douglas and Daintree with the best up-to-date local rates.
