It would be out of character to label these actions comical, yet Far North Queensland youth travel the distance to Port Douglas and commit outlandish acts and then display these activities on social media.

Only last week, a resident awoke to find his car, car keys, wallet and other valuables missing. It was daring as the perpetrators entered his bedroom while asleep unhindered and left with their valuables.

And although we would like to think that you are relatively safe in your home, the Officer in Charge for Port Douglas, Senior Sergeant Damian Meadows, said you cannot take anything for granted.

“I’ve said this countless times. People must not leave their valuables lying around. It makes it easy to steal and it’s important to keep your car keys, wallet and other valuables in a secure place. It’s equally important to lock your car,” he said.

Dale Priem, who lives on Brolga Street, has been on the receiving end and understandably did not enjoy the experience.

This is his story:

“So yeah, someone about 3:00am last Thursday night cut the flywire on our patio door, reached around with their fingers to unlock the snib, came into our house, opened my bedroom door, came into my bedroom and stole my pants from the floor next to me while I was sleeping.

“They stole my keys and wallet (which were in the pants pockets) and stole my car from my driveway with about 10k worth of music gear in it along with a lot of other personal stuff.

“Another girl's car was stolen from nearby by the same thieves on the same night. She found my car on Saturday in Westcourt as she was hunting for her own.

“I called 000, but the cops hadn't showed up by the time I got to Westcourt from Port Douglas, so I took the car home. Most of my gear was still in the car, and it was only slightly damaged. I found the other girl's license in my car, plus another local’s credit card that had obviously been stolen from his car on the same night.

“The other girl wasn't as lucky as me, a security guard found her car dumped in Yarrabah almost totally destroyed. They're still doing it almost every night, posting pictures of themselves committing the crimes on their Instagram pages. Police say there's little they can do.”
