Grab your swimsuit and sunnies and get ready to sit back and relax at Koko poolside bar and kitchen at Peppers Beach Club.

As part of Port Douglas’ annual Hot & Steamy Festival, Koko will be the decor of a tropical Vintage Swimwear Show.

The second edition of the LGBTQI+ festival will be going ahead from Thursday 18 to Monday 22 February, with several events set in iconic spots around Port Douglas.

Robyn Buick, operations manager at Peppers Beach Club, is delighted to be hosting the Runway Show on Saturday 20 February.

“We really wanted to be part of the festival this year as it is a fantastic opportunity for Port Douglas to showcase all we have to offer,” she said.

“Koko has the perfect atmosphere to provide an afternoon of fashion combined with delicious food and drinks.

“Think vintage swimwear from Splish Splash, gorgeous models and a few surprises for our guests, such as a special performance by iconic Drag Performer Millie Minogue.”

Locals Night

The tropical poolside bar has, since the end of last year, also become a favourite spot to enjoy live music and a shared menu at their weekly ‘Locals Night’.

“After a big refurbishment at the beginning of 2019, we wanted to showcase the new space and menu,” Ms Buick said.

“The idea of a locals night came from our general manager. She organized a similar night at her last property in Victoria and it was a big hit with the locals.”

Ms Buick said that their Monday nights have been fully booked from the start.

“We get a lot of comments about the amazing food and relaxed vibe.”

On the menu is a Dutch-Indonesian Rijsttafel (rice table) and Ms Buick said they choose a shared menu to create a relaxed and intimate dining experience.

“The South-east Asian style is also typical for the ‘Koko theme’.”

Ben Waters, who just moved up to Port Douglas, thinks “we need to get more locals nights like this in town”.

This week was the first time he visited the Locals Night. He especially enjoyed the “outstanding food” and the live music provided by well-known local artist Shannon Hunter.

Another foodie, Samantha Robbertson, a local who lived in Port Douglas for twenty years, is enthusiastic about the place.

“The restaurant is idyllic, and it is an affordable option for locals to come for a feed," she said.
