The Mossman Botanic Garden and the National Broadband Network will be the centres of discussion at a Douglas Chamber of Commerce networking event on Wednesday 28 July from 5-7pm at Inn Front, Mossman.

Members and non-members of the chamber are encouraged to relax and unwind after a hard day’s work, socialise with your fellow members with drinks and tapas, and hear updates from the CEO of Mossman Botanic Garden, Nicky Swan, and NBN local Community Engagement Manager, Ross Cantarino.

Both are significant entities in the Douglas Shire. Situated on 50 acres and in close proximity to where the Mossman markets are held (2 Foxton Ave, Mossman), the MBG will be a world class botanical garden showcasing the unique botanical collections of the UNESCO world heritage listed rainforests in Tropical North Queensland.

Featuring a state-of-the-art bio-security facility, restaurant, art gallery, amphitheatre and wetlands, the garden will be a vital research institution and opportunities for the community.

The Mossman Botanic Garden will demonstrate the value of tropical rainforests, including the UNESCO World Heritage listed rainforests in Tropical North Queensland where they are based, through documented collections of living plants and customary connections.

This living display of biodiversity will advance scientific and cultural knowledge, capture and help develop a greater understanding of the crucial role rainforests play globally. The collections will seek to merge communities together through a common interest in plants.

In January last year, the MBG received a $20,000 cash injection courtesy of the Federal Government’s Communities Environment Program.

The funding will allow the Gardens to work with the Australian Tropical Herbarium, which is based at James Cook University, for the development of plant collections.

In July 2017, the National Broadband Network (NBNCO) confirmed that 2,070 Port Douglas premises had been connected to the NBN. And a further 2,100 were rolled out over the next three months.

The rollout of the network has been considered one of the most complex and ambitious initiatives to be undertaken in any market across the world.

The Douglas Chamber of Commerce represents business interests in the Douglas Shire, collaboratively driving growth for the broader community.

It strives to:

  • Provide a forum for local business to raise issues to other members so as to arrange action to be taken; and
  • Promote networking between members of the PDCC for the benefit of all members.
