The Daintree Coast Community Shed Inc. has received a generous donation as they continue to fundraise to create a community hub north of the river.

Newell Beach Takeaway donated $1 from every piece of fish sold for the month of May to the organisation, totalling over $1000.

The Daintree Coast Community Shed Inc. are hoping to open a space where the community can come together and create, socialise, and feel safe.

The brainchild of Cindy and Colin Mclaughlin, the community centre will be based on the Australian Men’s Shed Association model but for the entire Daintree Coast community.

“We are such a small community we decided it would be for everyone,” said Cindy the Community Shed Secretary.

“What we are hoping to do is have a safe place where people can come spend time; where they can create things, cook things, and in the future where artists can display their wares.

“An area where everyone can be free to be themselves.

“The idea is to get people out of the house because if people stay isolated mental health and general health issues can arise.

“But by having this it may open people up to talk about their problems and be willing to accept other solutions for what is happening in their lives,” she said.

Colin, the Community Shed President, said they have been working on the idea since September last year.

“We have a location in mind, which we are still in the process of finalising with Council,” he said.

“We have had one grant which bought us the shed.

“We nearly have enough funds now to put down a slab.

“We are continually fundraising.

“The amount of support we have had from the community has been phenomenal.”

Peter Capp from Newell Beach Takeaway encouraged the entire community to get behind the cause.

“Because they are such a small community north of the river, for them to fundraise and get where they want to be, they need help from the wider community.

“The whole community needs to get behind people north of the river as we are all part of the Douglas Shire.”

Newell Beach Takeaway is also collecting recyclables to cash in as part of the Containers for Change scheme which they will donate to the organisation.

The Community Shed also has bins at the Cow Bay transfer station where community members can donate bottles and cans.
