Go Fund Me launched for local man’s long road to recovery

A Go Fund Me campaign has been set up to help a young local man’s long road to recovery after he suffered a brain injury in a serious car accident last month.
In the early hours of May 7 Melissa Hills lived every parent’s worst nightmare; being woken by police knocking at her door in the middle of the night.
“I had literally just got home from a traffic control job in Normanton and had had half an hour sleep when Mossman police delivered the bad news at 3:00am.”
Her 24-year-old son, Tyler Dawson was driving home to Daintree when he was involved in a single-vehicle car crash.
Tyler is believed to have fallen asleep behind the wheel before veering off the road and colliding with three trees on the Miallo Daintree Road.
Tyler was thrown out of the passenger side window landing on the side of the road where he laid for over two hours before a passing local found him and alerted emergency services.
He broke his femur, tibia and fibula bones in both legs and was airlifted to Cairns Base Hospital where he remained in an induced coma for 11 days before being slowly eased off life support.
“After Tyler came out of the coma, we thought he was going to be fine but unfortunately Tyler has since been diagnosed with a brain trauma,” Melissa said.
Tyler currently remains in Cairns Hospital but will soon need to travel to Brisbane for specialised rehabilitation.
“I have been by Tyler's side every day to help with recovery and will be there for all his medical treatments.

“Tyler can talk now; he knows I'm his mother and remembers most things. He has no recall of the car accident,” Melissa said.
Family friends have created a Go Fund Me page with a goal of raising $10,000 to cover the costs of Tyler's recovery with Melissa, a mother of four, unable to work while she cares for her son.
The funds will help get Tyler to Brisbane as well as rehabilitation equipment to help him when he leaves hospital and for the family to move into a more suitable house or unit close to medical facilities.
“He is in good hands at Cairns Hospital and on the road to recovery," Melissa said.
“It will be a long journey for Tyler, but we are so happy he is alive.”
