Three Douglas Shire pugilists, training out of Buzza’s Boxing Gym in Cooya Beach put on impressive performances in a Golden Glove tournament over the weekend.

With a roaring crowd of 400 plus punters and 22 fights over two nights in the town of Home Hill QLD, locals Lachy Buzza, Megan Newman, and Kayne House confirmed there is no fiercer competition than hungry fighters wanting to prove themselves as Golden Glove champions.

The trio are coached by former super cruiserweight Australian champion Danny Buzza who said the hard work paid off.

“What we have been training for is starting to show in the ring, I couldn’t be prouder of all of the team, possibly eyeing off state titles later this year,” he said.

The Douglas Shire fighters knew the Golden Glove titles would be an entirely different level of competition, but with cool hands and steely faces, they took to the squared circle head-on.

Equipped with a formidable jab, the extremely skilful Megan Newman was quick and hard-hitting, moving like silk she went toe to toe in an epic battle against Paige Candy from Basault Boxing. The two went the distance in their 60kg Division Novice Senior Woman match with Megan taking the silver.

Megan said she knew she would have a tough fight ahead of her as she fought Paige [Candy] early this year.

“It’s been my goal to fight at a Golden Gloves tournament and despite not coming away with the gold, I’m so grateful for the experience and the knowledge I can last the distance with some of the fittest and most talented amateur boxers of North QLD.”

A superior boxer seems to hypnotise his opponent with movements which to the spectator seem perfectly easy, slow, and sure - Lachy Buzza showed this pose along with a powerful right in his 75kg Division Novice Senior Male match against Cody Satchwell from Precision Boxing Club.

He showed little signs of tiring with this being his second fight of the weekend taking home gold with a unanimous decision at the final bell.

“It was difficult fighting two nights back-to-back but my hard training leading up to the fight helped me recover well,” said Lachy.

“I was happy with how relaxed I was. I landed good shots early which made my opponents respect my power.”

Local fighter Kayne House fought the hard yards against wily leftie Aaron Repliza from Art of Strength. Kayne made every movement with the cunning ferocity of a predator stalking its prey and every punch thrown with bad intentions. The grueling match went to the final tick of the clock with the silver around Kayne’s neck.

“The fight was hard with my opponent being a southpaw, it was a great experience to fight in such a well run event,” said Kayne.

“I’ve learned a lot from that fight, it was pretty fairly matched as far as the boxing skills went, but he was much stronger than I was.”

Event organiser Scott McLean from Rock Solid Boxing said overall that the tournament was a really big success, with fighters coming from all over the place including Buzza’s Gym from Port Douglas.

“We really appreciate them coming down and supporting the tournament.

“Megan has really improved a lot since the last time I saw her compete and she was competitive against a very worthy opponent.

“Lachy Buzza really displayed some beautiful boxing skills and looked comfortable in both of his fights against worthy opponents, but he just seemed to be a class above, he performed exceptionally well.

“And Kayne House had a good fight as well.

“Buzza gym has a great trainer he was a high-level professional boxer and it’s good to see a small town like Port Douglas have quality competitive guys like that and we appreciate them traveling down here and hopefully if they host a tournament if we could get matched we’d love to repay the favour,” said Mr McLean.

Buzza’s Boxing Gym will be hosting their inaugural Tournament in the Douglas Shire on 18 September, further details will be released at a later date.
