What happens to your estate after your death? It’s often not a conversation everyone wants to have, however, Mitch Williams from SiDCOR Port Douglas says it is a vitally important conversation, to ensure your loved ones are looked after.

SiDCOR is holding a free succession and estate planning seminar on 31 March designed to give locals access to experts in the estate and succession planning industry so that you can have peace of mind that your assets will go where you want them to.

“We too often see clients who have no will in place, let alone estate planning which often leads to unnecessary income taxes, high estate administration costs and significant family disputes,” Mr Williams said.

“By bringing the experts to the region, we hope residents will stop kicking the can down the road due to the uncomfortable and confronting nature of the issue.”

The seminar will be held at the Pullman Sea Temple Resort and will feature experts in the field, Rita Zapulla, principal of SMSF Strategic Advisors, and Brien Leibinger, principal of Brien Leibinger Lawyers.

“They have 25 and 35 years experience respectively and they both have a great reputation of providing quality advice and expertly tailored solutions to address all their clients concerns and objectives,” Mr Williams said.

“They will be covering off many topics relating to estate and succession planning right from the ground up. They will outline simple strategies and matters you should be addressing straight away that come at little cost but can save significant money and heartache for the loved ones you leave behind.”

In simple terms, Estate and succession planning is formalising a plan to be followed should you pass or become incapacitated.

The plan will address matters such as asset distribution, personal medical care, guardianship of your dependents, and access to government benefits.

“Having up to date and formalised estate and succession and plan is vitally important to ensure that your assets are distributed according to your wishes and your loved ones are looked after,” Mr Williams said.

“I’m sure just about all readers will have some experience or certainly heard stories of significant family disputes relating to an inheritance. Disputes that can lead to irreparable family damage which I’m sure no one wants to leave behind as their legacy.”

And Mr Williams says estate planning is something everyone should do.

“A common misconception with estate and succession planning is that its only for the really wealthy or people looking to retire. This could not be further from the truth.

“If you have children, own a property or other assets, or run a business, then this seminar is for you. No matter your age.

“Proper estate planning is often more impactful for families with modest assets as they cannot afford the loss of time and money that can be caused by having no estate planning in place.

“Plus, the event is free and available to all residents of the Douglas Shire, not just clients of SiDCOR. So, what do you have to lose?”

The free seminar kicks off at 5:00pm on Wednesday 31 March. Register to attend here or contact SiDCOR Port Douglas on 40995994. Registrations close on 25 March.
