Resort towns like Port Douglas thrive on positive reinforcement and are flattered when visitors heap praise on what is available: the numerous outdoor activities, restaurants, easy going and shopping on Macrossan Street.

John Verhelst and his wife Emeritus Professor Helen Lange are a couple keen to record their stay in Port Douglas and were gracious in sharing their holiday experience in Port Douglas with Newsport.

And John has a message which will be well received in the town: “Thanks to all the locals: just keep doing what you are doing now. Yes, we will return and enjoy another great time,” said John who has extensive hospitality industry experience.

John was also lavish in his praise of the town and how well it’s held up during the pandemic.

“It is so clean, well-spaced with lovely gardens. But most of all the local folk: you have been through hell in the last 12 months and instead of feeling sorry for yourselves, you smile, are happy and very positive. If you do have a problem, you guys are hiding it well,” he said.

John said COVID-19 changed a lifestyle that included living overseas for some years; travelling extensively internationally for many years; and enjoying vacations in most destinations. He has visited more than 70 countries.

“I concede, we forgot Australia. But COVID 19 changed all that,” said John who resides in Merimbula, NSW.

Here is John’s account of his visit to Port Douglas.

“So, off to Port Douglas for my wife and me. March, end of rainy season: never did see the rain. The townsfolk would have to be the kindest we have met in many years.

“And then there’s the restaurants; from Melaleuca to the Yachties and Tin Shed. Not to forget Harrison’s at the Sheraton Mirage – where we had an on-pool room – fresh seafood, along with professional and friendly service, and wine at realistic prices.

“What more could you ask for. Oh yes, a Lady Douglas cruise where the skipper/owner must be the best sales person in town, giving everyone a great wrap, along with a great cruise up the river, complete with crocodile viewing.”

Both John and wife Helen can look back on celebrated careers.

A Vietnam veteran, John’s hospitality industry exceeds 35 years, with a range of senior positions in travel, hotels and the airline industry in various parts of the world.

Emeritus Professor Lange has considerable experience in the banking and finance industry, including capital markets and treasury. Her expertise is in bank management, corporate finance and strategic finance, financial risk management and strategy.
