UPDATE:

Power has been restored at all but 81 customers on Limpet Avenue, Mitre Street, and Nautilus Street following a car accident which knocked over a power pole on Mitre Street earlier today.

EARLIER:

A car has crashed into a power pole, knocking it down in Port Douglas leaving hundreds without electricity.

A QAS spokesperson said at 2:58pm emergency services were called to a single vehicle crash on Mitre Street in Port Douglas.

No one was injured and the spokesperson said QAS services were not needed.

Emergency services have blocked off Mitre Street to both vehicles and pedestrians while the powerline is being removed.

An Ergon Energy spokesperson said, “for public safety reasons, we had to interrupt power to 800 customers at around 3:00pm after a report of powerlines down.”

Ergon crews are now working on-site.

“Crews will need to replace a power pole, which has been snapped off at ground level.

“They will need to complete those emergency repairs before power can be safely restored to around 80 customers in the immediate vicinity of the damage, but they’re hoping to have the power back on to the vast majority of customers within an hour.

“If people see fallen powerlines they should always stay well away, warn others in the area and report this life-threatening hazard to 000 or call Ergon on 13 16 70,” the Ergon spokesperson said.
