The Daintree River Ferry contract negotiations are hoped to be finalised in a Special Council Meeting on Monday after months of discussions.

In a statement today Douglas Shire Council said it is nearing the final stages of securing the Daintree River crossing after holding a constructive Special Council Meeting in Mossman today.

“Councillors have asked the CEO to provide critical final details which will be tabled at a final Special Council Meeting early next week,” a Council spokesperson said.

Following the decision to go ahead with a two-ferry system last year, Douglas Shire Council staff have been working to finalise a contract with Sirron Enterprises Pty Ltd.

The current contract is due to expire on 30 June this year.

“Council is currently finalising critical details of a number of options for a continuation of service beyond 1 July 2021.”

Today’s meeting was the second in as many weeks on the issue.

“At the previous session of the Special Council Meeting, Council received proposals from Sirron Enterprises (Qld) Pty Ltd.

“Council resolved to seek further legal advice and requested additional information regarding alternative vessels.

“Councillors also resolved to make an offer to the amount as discussed in the closed meeting,” the spokesperson said.

Notice of next week’s Special Meeting, to finalise the Daintree River Crossing, has been given.

The meeting will be held on Monday 17 May commencing at 3:30pm at the Council Chambers.

Council Meetings are now open to the public. There will be a maximum of 10 people allowed (due to size of the room and to allow for social distancing) and will not need to pre-register.

The meeting will be live-streamed online and can be accessed via Council’s website here.
