The Douglas Shire will play host to a new services expo designed to provide networking opportunities and foster connection for people with a disability.

The inaugural Douglas Shire Services Expo is a free event by Mission Australia and will feature service providers, information stands, free merchandise, free food, refreshments and entertainment.

The event is being held on Wednesday, December 8 from 1.30pm to 4.30pm at the Mossman Bowls Club, 6-8 Johnson St, Mossman.

There will also be opportunities for one-on-one meetings, information sessions on the NDIS and much more.

The event is part of Disability Action Week and International Day of People with Disability celebrations and will connect people with disability, their families and carers to NDIS providers.

Mainstream and community services will also be on display, such as the Douglas Shire, Tenants Queensland, Queensland Indigenous Family Violence Legal Service as well as local sporting and recreation clubs.

25 Services

Mission Australia regional leader North Queensland Dr Phil Flint encouraged the Douglas community to take the opportunity to check out the 25 services that will be present.

“We’re really excited to be able to put on an event of this size for the local community and invite everyone to come along and celebrate and find out what services, supports and activities are available,” he said.

“Apart from support services, there will also be community groups on display: from hockey to bowls; things that help build connection in our community.”

While the expo aims to showcase services already being offered in the Douglas Shire, the event has also attracted a number of new services with a keen interest in having an ongoing presence in the area.

“Community feedback has overwhelmingly been about a need for more services based in the Douglas Shire,” said Dr Flint.

“This is a wonderful opportunity to come down and speak in person to services you might be interested in.

“A strong community turn-out will also help convince more providers to set up a permanent presence in Douglas.”

Further expos are planned for the Mareeba and Innisfail communities in 2022.
