Police were called to the Chillagoe area on Sunday afternoon after a man aged in his 60s failed to return to his vehicle after a day of fossicking.

Following their own unsuccessful search for the missing man, a group of fossickers contacted police and provided information that the man was without food and water and he was lost in an area well known for hazardous mine shafts and dangerous terrain.

Police search and rescue coordinators attended the scene to coordinate the search for the missing man, which involved the deployment of the Government Rescue Helicopter and the Cairns Dog Squad.

It very much a family affair as the helicopter loaded up in Cairns. On board was Sergeant Dave Raymond and Police Dog (PD) Axel (who considers himself the family dog), and sitting in the seat opposite was Sergeant Raymond’s son Jacob Raymond, who was the rescue crew officer with QG Air.

PD Axel was most relaxed in the helicopter, receiving plenty of pats from his family.

Good news was received as the helicopter team made its way to Chillagoe. They were advised the missing man had managed to make his way to the Chillagoe township and was located safe and well.

This is not the first time the Raymond family has been involved in jobs together.

Last year they were involved with other emergency services in assisting a man who had suffered a stroke on the Redlynch Copperlode track.

Sergeant Raymond and other emergency personnel made their way by foot up the track to the injured man and guided the air rescue crew to his location.

There couldn’t have been a prouder moment for Sergeant Raymond when he saw his own son winch down from the helicopter to attend to the rescue.

The pair then loaded the man up so he could be winched to the helicopter and conveyed directly to hospital.

Well done team Raymond – that includes you too Axel!
