The exciting ‘Tropical Destinations Photography Exhibition’ was launched last night at the Port Douglas Community Hall and is open to the public this week.

The gallery will display the work of the Douglas Photography Society and showcase some of the region’s best known photographers, including Tracey Jones and Ian Arcus.

The Douglas Photography Society

“Our society has members who work as professionals, but the contribution of amateur photographers is on the same level," said Tracey Jones, President, Douglas Photography Society. "We are lucky to have many extraordinary photographers."

The Port Douglas region is a candy store for photographers, filled with the colour and contrast of unique landscapes, wildlife and people.

What makes this exhibition unique is it pieces together a vision of Port Douglas from a wide range of ages.

“Our Club has many members. The youngest, well, she’s just got her drivers licence and is 17 years old. Our oldest member is well into his 70’s,” said Tracey.

The exhibition highlights

This year there are ten photography categories included in the exhibition, ranging from portrait to artistic.

While the annual event has always impressed, this year's display highlights the beauty of ocean marine creatures, the rainforest and of course the humans of Port Douglas.

“Each year the President picks their favourite photo,” said Tracey. “My favourite was Kate Powick’s exhibit. The image is of a pelican in full flight.”

Capturing a photograph of an animal in the wild requires more than ‘aim the camera, press a button and wish for luck.’

“There are few people who can capture a perfect image like Kate’s. The bird is flying incredibly fast, and this image is so sharp”, said Tracey. “For the photo to work, the camera had to be on a very fast shutter speed with light adjustments. Kate captured this moment with perfection.”

How to get involved with the Photography Society

For keen and aspiring photographers, the society holds regular meetups, with mystery group outings and skills workshops.

The annual exhibition is the highlight of the year as it provides a chance for all members to showcase their work.

Every photo is on sale to the public offering locals a chance to support our regional arts community and to own a special view of the region.

Exhibition Opening Hours:
