Council leads drive for mail delivery to Cooya & Newell Beach
Mail Service

By Howard Salkow and Jamie Jansen
Douglas Shire Council councillors today voted unanimously at an open session of Council to get behind Cooya and Newell Beach in their quest to receive mail delivery service.
Councillors responded favourably to Councillor Abigail Noli’s Notion of Motion that Council:
a) Contacts Australia Post on behalf of Cooya Beach residents and requests that Australia Post conducts a survey into mail delivery requirements in this suburb;
b) Council assists, if necessary, Australia Post to conduct the survey with any available resources;
c) Presents the petition to Australia Post that has been tabled at the 29th March Douglas Shire Council ordinary meeting.
d) Notes the petition to Australia Post is to be tabled at 26 April 2022 Douglas Shire Council ordinary meeting; and
e) Contacts State and Federal MPs and ask for assistance in advocating for Cooya Beach and Newell Beach residents.
It was agreed that Newell Beach, who have the same postal code as Cooya Beach, be added to this motion.
Councillor Noli issued the following statement after the Council meeting:
“I am very happy to lead Council into the effort of securing mail delivery to both Cooya and Newell beaches. To date, Australia Post does not deliver mail to these parts of Douglas and at the request of residents, I hope to be able to assist in securing this essential life service on behalf of my communities.
“After being contacted by some concerned residents, I decided that the best course of action was to bring a motion to Council so that then Council makes the request to Australia Post instead of individuals or small groups making that request.
“Cooya Beach is a rapidly growing suburb within Douglas and currently there is no mail delivery to the residents. The population of Cooya Beach will continue to grow as further housing developments are constructed.
“Data suggests that Cooya Beach may be one of the most rapidly growing suburbs in Douglas.“The current situation is not ideal as important mail is sometimes not being promptly attended to and some residents have difficulty travelling into Mossman.
“Council will make the request to conduct a necessity survey and assist Australia Post in the conducting of the survey if required.”
