Council provides a voice for mail delivery push
Douglas Shire Council will champion a push to get a mail delivery service for residents living in Cooya Beach and Newell Beach. Council will ask Australia Post to do a survey at the beachside communities to see how many people want to receive mail in their letterboxes.
Since the issue was raised in September last year, Council has been helping residents negotiate with Australia Post for a mail delivery service without much success. Douglas Shire Mayor Michael Kerr said delivering mail to a house should be a responsible service standard for Australia Post.
“Many people living in Cooya Beach and Newell Beach have been asking us how to get a mail delivery service in their area,” he said. “We now have plenty of construction happening out at Ocean Breeze Estate which will push the number of properties in Cooya closer to 300.”
“Council does not believe it is a responsible and appropriate level of service for our growing beachside suburbs.” Residents living in Newell Beach and Cooya Beach currently have to travel to the Mossman Post Office to pick up their mail."
Water main replacement tender awarded
A WATER main located in Grant Street, Port Douglas will be replaced later this year. Douglas Shire Council has awarded a tender to FGF Developments to replace the pipeline to create a more robust system and reduce maintenance requirements over the next 50 years.
The works location on Grant Street will extend from Macrossan Street to Mowbray St. Further information about the works will be provided closer to the works date. Council also noted a Capital Works progress report which showed Council Officers are working on 108 projects valued at $35.595 million in the current delivery program.
Concealed Leak Financial Assistance Policy continued
FINANCIAL assistance will continue to be provided to water users when concealed leaks are undetected. Council has endorsed a Concealed Leak Financial Assistance Policy, which was first adopted in June 2020, to provide relief to customers in a situation where excess water consumption arises due a concealed leak where the owner could not reasonably know of its existence.
Council endeavours to notify customers when it becomes aware of a large increase in a property’s consumption through the meter reading cycle
