Get ready for a night of banter as Port Douglas’ favourite stand-up comedian Evan Hocking turns the Clink Theatre upside down this Friday night, June 3.

Port Douglas is no unfamiliar territory for Mr Hocking as he used to call our beautiful seaside town his home.

However, the thriving metropolis of Port Douglas was only ever going to hold onto Mr Hocking for a short period of time before he moved back to Melbourne to further his comedy career.

“I met a girl from Melbourne eleven years ago and decided to move back to see if we could make a go of things,” he told Newsport.

“It’s ten degrees in Melbourne and I do a lot of rough gigs in Victoria so the thought of doing a show at the Clink Theatre sounds like heaven.

“If I don’t sell out the show I’m never coming back to Port Douglas again. No, I love Port. I'm actually getting married up here in July.

“Because of Covid we had to postpone the wedding twice. My fiancé said “If we have to postpone for a second time what should we do?”, I said “Maybe just be friends”.”

The doctor and the dickhead

“My fiancé’s a doctor. I’m a dickhead. It’s an interesting mix. There’s inspiration every day.

“We’ve bought a house and are looking to have kids. It’s about trying to be an adult, which I’m not going to lie about. I'm struggling.”

“We would like to have kids but I’m a bit older so the other week I had to do a semen analysis. I had to put it into a cup which was weird but at least now I know what ‘keep cups’ are for.”

Stand-up comedy career

Mr Hocking has been performing stand-up comedy for nine years. Having risen quickly through the Melbourne comedy ranks in the last few years he has become a regular at sporting clubs, corporate fundraisers and comedy rooms around the country.

“I used to muck around on Port FM when I was up here. I had a show called ‘Unnecessary Noise with Buddah’, I think at its peak I had two loyal listeners but dad lost the radio in the divorce so I dropped down to just mum after that.

“The thing I love doing the most in life is making people laugh and having a cold one after.”

Mr Hocking is heading all over Victoria and Tasmania with his show called ‘I forgot my Medicare card!’.
