Over 20 years ago, Mark Watkins from Mt Uncle Distillery set out to create some of the best spirits in the world.

Today, his FNQ Rum Co. range has won countless awards, including gold medals at the world rum awards in London.

Mark’s rum making process begins in the Atherton Tablelands where sugar cane is grown and harvested before moving to the sugar mill for crushing.

Once the cane is crushed, he personally does ‘the sugar run’ to collect freshly pressed cane juice and bring it home to the distillery where it is fermented, distilled, placed into barrels and, when ready, bottled for your enjoyment.

“We put so much passion and love into our products and have always wanted to produce some of the best rum in the world,” Mr Watkins said.

“But we didn’t think we’d get the gold this early at the highly regarded World Rum Awards in London.”

To help rum enthusiasts understand more about the distilling process, Mark has teamed up with Port Douglas’ most iconic resort for a monthly rum-fuelled afternoon, dubbed ‘Raise a Glass to the Past’.

This signature experience pays homage to the cane cutters who arrived in the region over 100 years ago and their descendants who are successful farmers and business owners in the region today.
