A man has sparked outrage after social media comments about his general lack respect for the environment, including the pride and joy of the Douglas Shire - Four Mile beach - angered many local residents.

A local man had expressed his disappointment about finding rubbish strewn about on Four Mile and left a simple comment saying “Don’t come to the Beach if you don’t respect it. Please do the right thing.”

In reply, this following comment incensed locals.

“Just pick it up and stop the showboating,” Jonathan Jordan said in his post.

“Lots of backpackers in town. I’m homeless and get fined for just living… it’s just trash.

“Just move on with life and accept people make mess.”

Those three comments saw many local residents immediately take issue with Mr Jordan’s viewpoint.

“Hell no, a local said. “You accept we love our beautiful town. Homeless or not clean up after yourself. It's called respect.”

Mr Jordan then doubled down on his stance.

“Respect… I’m homeless because of a housing market made for profit,” he remarked.

“Your rubbish is a 1st world problem… homeless is an everyday, everyone problem…

“I watched another homeless person make a camp 10m from a kids playground… with kids still playing in it… no upset people about that… but, oh no, a rubbish pile… Quick let’s make a fuss.”

That comment again ignited strong debate.

“Rubbish is not a first world problem - it’s an entire world problem,” a local resident posted.

“Every country on earth (yes even Antarctica) where people exist has a problem of managing waste.

“It’s why we have things like bins, dumps, sewage systems, people to clean up etc.

“The entire world is being negatively affected by human waste right now because we aren’t managing it properly and it starts with individuals taking care of their own by doing the right thing and using bins.”
