Teachers to battle parents in great comedy debate
A reminder Port Douglas State School will hold a fundraiser at the Clink Theatre from 7pm this Saturday night.
This will be the third annual great 'comedy' debate in which the school raises funds on the night through ticket sales, auction prizes and bar sales.
School principal Doug Barnes is the esteemed adjudicator while the wonderful P&C volunteers led by Janice Ruffles, have collated amazing auction prizes thanks to the assistance of awesome local businesses across the Douglas Shire.
It's set to be a big night of laughs, drinks and it is definitely an adult only night out, so come along and watch some amazing teachers debate against some feisty parents.
Unreasonable E.A.S.T about as tough as it comes
One of the more unique and fascinating events the Douglas Shire has co-hosted in recent times is expected to welcome some of its first, weary finishers across the line at Cairns esplanade tonight.
The Unreasonable E.A.S.T is an ultra-distance event in which the 55 participants who took part in the 100 or 200 mile events ran through and past some of our most scenic and dense locations across the Shire.
To be considered a proper finisher the remaining 200-mile runners are required to finish the event by 11 o’clock on Sunday or within a 120 hour timeframe.
Separate to that, those doing the 100-miler event their cutoff time is within a 60-hour window.
Runners are permitted to sleep at checkpoint sleep stations throughout the event but must leave after certain cut off times.
The 200-milers started their event on Tuesday out the front of Port Douglas Surf life Saving Club before they made their way through cane fields along the Mowbray Valley, to the base of the bump track and further into the course before arriving at Black Mountain.
Stage two required runners to get from Black Mountain to Wetherby, while stage three was from Wetherby to Quade. There were 20 stages in total for the 200-mile participants.
“I fell in love with the Douglas area and its surrounds and thought it would be an ideal location to stage this event,” the event director told Newsport.
"We’ve kept things low key this year but will look to ramp things up next year.”
A number of participants from the Douglas Shire took part, as did others from the Mareeba Shire and Cairns Shires. The event also had international racers from across Europe and New Zealand.
Blue Care success
Lastly, Blue Care has achieved a staggering 70 years of service in Queensland and as such, locally, will celebrate the milestone by hosting a morning tea at Mossman’s Uniting Church Hall tomorrow, August 25, from 10am-12pm.
