Loneliness. Let’s face it at some time or other, we’ve all felt a little more isolated and not as connected as we’d like to be.

Luckily, the Douglas Shire is one that fosters a highly inclusive environment and culture which is a great start on the path to feeling a part of your local community.

If you’re currently feeling like you’d like to make more of a local contribution and want to be more of a part of your community Newsport has put together a small guide that may point you in the right direction.

Join local clubs and organizations

The Douglas Shire boasts a vibrant community through numerous clubs and organisations that cater to diverse interests. Whether you're into sports, arts, gardening, or community service, joining these groups will allow you to meet like-minded people and participate in activities that align with your passions.

Local groups and clubs like the CWA, Zumba Port Douglas, Rainforest Rescue, Tangaroa Blue Foundation, and Port Douglas Surf Life Saving club offer many opportunities to be included and to feel involved.

Attend community events

Keep an eye out for local events, festivals, and gatherings taking place in and around the Douglas Shire. Participating in these events not only provides you with opportunities to socialise but also helps you immerse yourself in the town's culture and traditions. Newsport’s very own public notice page on our website has regular listed events that provide opportunities to get involved in the local community.

Volunteer for a cause

Get involved in local volunteer programs or charitable organisations that resonate with your values. There is a brilliant volunteer group in the Douglas Shire called Douglas Grassroots volunteer network who connect volunteers with suitable local volunteer organisations – they do a great job and this is a great starting point to find a role that is right for you. Perhaps you’re interested in becoming an SES volunteer or maybe walking a dog for the local Paws and Claws?

Take part in outdoor activities

Port Douglas offers an abundance of outdoor activities, from hiking through lush rainforests to exploring the Great Barrier Reef. Go outside, adventure and meet like-minded people.

Attend workshops and classes

Check out workshops and classes offered in the area, such as art classes, cooking workshops, or yoga sessions. There are stacks of offerings across the Douglas Shire. Ensure you follow relevant local Facebook pages, see what suits you and go from there.

So, over to you Douglas Shire... are you part of a club, organisation or local group that would love a few new faces or volunteers? We'd love to know about it. Leave a message in the comment section about your group and how locals can get involved with what you do.

Thank you!
