With their tiny paws, fuzzy coats, and soulful eyes, eight delightful 5-week-old puppies have taken centre stage at Paws & Claws Animal Shelter in Craiglie. Among this adorable bunch, four have already found their forever families, leaving an irresistibly charming quartet eagerly awaiting their turn to be welcomed into new homes.

Meet Muffin, Bingo, Bluey, and Stripe – three girls and one boy, each a playful bundle of energy eagerly anticipating the love that will surround them starting New Year's Day when they turn 8 weeks old and ready for adoption.

Their Mum, a Kelpie called Niya, was found wandering pregnant and alone and initially found shelter in Mareeba. Unable to accommodate Niya and her soon-to-arrive pups, Mareeba Shelter reached out to Paws & Claws for assistance. The compassionate team welcomed Niya, ensuring her safety and well-being.

Shelter manager Chris Barber shared that Niya’s arrival prompted a vet appointment for a health check, heartworm test, and an X-ray on the same day. The anticipation reached its peak on a Sunday afternoon when Niya joyfully welcomed a litter of eight adorable puppies.

For those interested in adopting these charming pups, Mr Barber emphasised a thoughtful process involving a house check and personal connection to ensure a suitable commitment.

“We also really hit home that this is quite a big commitment and that we are here to help throughout the process with any questions they might have along the way,” Mr Barber added.

The pups have all had their regular health checks and worming, with the first vaccination scheduled on the 18th of this month, coinciding with a general health check and microchipping.

Highlighting the importance of socialisation, the shelter refrains from letting the pups go too early, ensuring Niya’s continued presence until at least eight weeks.

“This period allows for vital lessons in social etiquette, a role predominantly played by Mum Niya, ensuring the puppies are well-prepared for the loving homes that await them,” Mr Barber explained.

Managing the responsibility of caring for both the pups and Niya, Mr Barber acknowledges the initial weeks involve focused attention on Niya's well-being, ensuring she receives proper nourishment to care for herself and her offspring. “Niya eats an impressive four kilograms of meat a day.”

Come the new year, the scene is perfectly arranged for Muffin, Bingo, Bluey, and Stripe to carve their place into the hearts of loving families.

If you are interested in adopting one of these gorgeous pups you can contact the shelter on 074098 5721 to schedule an appointment.
