In the midst of recent challenges in our Shire, our community yearns for a positive break. The upcoming Tropical Christmas Party at Hemingway’s Port Douglas on December 28th is a welcome beacon of joy, arriving precisely when needed to provide a timely uplift for all.

Originally conceived as a means to revitalise the Port Douglas Marina, the festive gathering has taken on a new significance following the recent natural disasters. Offering a welcome diversion from the challenges of the cyclone aftermath, this event promises to be a breath of fresh air, especially for families grappling with cabin fever.

Ali O’Neill, Venue Manager at Hemingway’s, expressed, “It's an opportunity for the community to come together, have some fun, and lift the Christmas spirits during this trying time”.

“We invite everyone to join us, partake in the festivities, and take advantage of the local specials we've curated,” he added.

The festivities will commence with a sizzling sausage barbecue, featuring a variety of catering options in stock, along with the tempting Devil’s Thumb Cocktail Bar. Local musician Kiki will be infusing Christmas songs with a tropical twist, adding a musical flair to the event.

Prizes are up for grabs throughout the day, including a Best Dressed Competition and an Open Mic Christmas Song Contest where everyone is encouraged to join in and sing some Christmas tunes.

The celebration caters to the whole family, with children’s activities and marina-side games like cornhole, giant Jenga and darts. “To enhance the experience, we have arranged for a face painter and plan to keep the misting system running throughout the day, contingent on water availability,” Mr O’Neill added.

In the face of supply challenges due to current road blockages, Hemingway’s maintains an optimistic outlook, armed with a shipping container brimming with beer to sustain customers in the coming weeks.

Mr O’Neil, who lives in Cairns and was fortunate enough to secure the first boat back from Port Douglas last Tuesday. Currently, he is actively procuring supplies to bring back to Port Douglas, dedicating himself to supporting the community in every possible way.

“I left my car with staff members to provide them with means of transportation and have already booked a ticket back up to Port Douglas on Friday morning to support the team and bring whatever goods I can.

“While we do have some stock on hand at Hemingway’s, the primary focus for the Christmas Party is on responsibly managing available resources. It’s about making the most of what we have and ensuring that any contributions align with responsible practices.”
