Australian Geographic spruiks Douglas to visitors
REGION RECOMMENDED

Port Douglas and its surrounds have been featured on the respected Australian Geographic magazine website as a must-do to visit by road.
An article called ‘Head North to Port’ points out that Cairns to Port Douglas is just an hour’s drive, yet advises travellers to take it slow on the stunning section of highway – as there’s much to experience.
“Stop to stroll along Palm Cove’s melaleuca-lined esplanade,” the piece, in a section sub-headed ‘five must-do weekend road trips’ said.
“Continue north along the wending coastal road, which is sandwiched between rainforest and sea, and stop at a handful of designated viewing points to soak in the magnificent tropical coastline.”
Thala Beach Nature Reserve is one of several places mentioned, where Aust Geo advises readers to stop off and eat (and sleep if they choose) while enjoying the surrounding forests and “unsullied shoreline”.
The destination of Port Douglas gets a top review, the article saying that “you’ll discover a chic township that serves up a long list of things to do, from eateries serving up locally grown produce, a host of resort-style shopping options and a local market under a canopy of towering fig trees selling everything from artisan jewellery to fresh fruit and veg.”
Visitors are reminded that while in the area, Mossman Gorge is a must visit, where they can “join the local Kuku Yalanji on a Dreamtime walk – and explore the Daintree Rainforest – in the company of Walkabout Cultural Adventures.
“Both will open your mind and heart to the stories and significance of this region from its Traditional Owners,” the article reads on.
“While you’re there, set your senses adrift on a unique river snorkel and float with Back Country Bliss Adventures, or head to the Daintree Wilderness Lodge for a peaceful sleep. Add on Cape Tribulation and, further north, Cooktown, for a longer staycation.”
