A frantic search continues this morning for a 49 year-old man who remains missing at Lake Tinaroo after failing to resurface following an attempt to assist younger swimmers in distress at the popular Tablelands swimming and boating location.

A Police diving squad from Brisbane will join the search today while the SES will continue to use a drone and flood boats from Atherton, Malanda and Mareeba.

The Rescue Helicopter 510 will also assist with the search.

A Police spokesperson said the man was last seen approximately 1000 feet from the western side of the lake when he went into the water to assist some family members struggling in the waters of Lake Tinaroo.

At round 11am the man failed to exit the Lake.

Nearby members of the public started a frantic search for the man using jet skis and boats before Police and other more equipped searchers arrived on the scene.

Police will update the media at 12pm today regarding the search for the missing man.
