SHERATON RUM MASTERCLASS
Ready to start learning something new this year?
For January, get a better understanding of the often overlooked spirit, rum.
Rum starts its life as sugarcane, so if there were ever a drink that represented Tropical North Queensland, Sheraton Grand Mirage Resort believes it would have to be dark rum.
That’s why a regular event at Daintree Bar, the ‘Raise a Glass to the Past’ Rum Masterclass pays homage to the hardworking cane farmers a generation or two before the arrival of Tourism in the region.
The resort is committed to supporting local products wherever possible, so when you have rum’s purest ingredient at your doorstep, it makes sense to make something very special out of it!
The popular Masterclass is on again this weekend, guided by Head Distiller and Director of Mt Uncle Distillery, Mark Watkins who started distilling spirits in his cubby house when he was just 16 years old.
"I grew up on a banana farm and we had bananas that were just rotting in our paddocks, so my first product was banana wine and then a banana liqueur," he said. "With a passion for more, I studied Environmental Science down south and when I returned I started making rum with one goal in mind, to make one of the best rums in the world,” said Mark.
To say he has achieved this is an understatement, as he now has three award-winning products from his FNQ Rum Co. label, globally recognized, two having received highly coveted gold medals at the London Spirits Competition.
Mark’s unpretentious commentary goes down smoothly with a tasting of all 3 FNQ Rum Co. Products paired with tasty morsels prepared by Sheraton’s Executive Chef Belinda Tuckwell.
