The lovely ladies behind the NicNak Shed
Senior's Wrap

Started in 1999, in a small shed in the garden of an old house on Mudlo Street, the NicNak Shed has grown into even more than an Op Shop, all thanks to a strong army of active seniors.
Now housed in a stand alone building, Port Douglas’ one-and-only op shop, provides locals with a welcoming and accessible place to shop their second hand bargains.
The Shed also provides crucial funding for the Port Douglas Community Service Network, last year providing more than 17 percent of the Network’s total funding.
This Friday, 13 January 2023, the op shop will reopen after a strong crew of senior volunteers and staff bundled their powers during a two-week renovation.

ALL HANDS ON DECK
NicNak Shed Manager, Jo Westgate, told Newsport that the Op Shop wouldn’t be able to exist if it wasn’t for the senior volunteers.
“My fantastic team are mostly seniors with our oldest volunteer being over 80,” she said.
“During the two-week renovation, the ladies went all hands on deck giving the shed a whole new industrial look, using a colour palette of grey, orange and teal.
“Strengthened by a diverse group of volunteers and staff, renovation days included emptying out the op shop, sanding, prepping and painting, building shelves and the construction of our new look counter.
“Following the success of the NicNak Shed fashion parade we wanted to use some of the $2800 funds raised to improve the experience of our shoppers and volunteers in the NicNak Shed by giving it a fresh new look.
“We welcome Douglas Shire seniors to head in this Friday for our grand reopening, check out our refurbished shop, enjoy a sausage sizzle and a friendly, welcoming shopping experience.”
MEANTIME IN OTHER SENIOR NEWS….
QCWA ladies sew for good cause
The ladies at the Queensland Women’s Association Mossman Branch have started the new year ‘hands-on’ with several afternoons of sewing and knitting.
Orphaned baby flying-foxes that go into rescue care will be provided with cosy cuddle cushions as a group of ladies sewed and filed over 30 ‘cuddle cushions’.
Also QCWA members Margaret and Renee have been busy knitting beautiful baby cardigans and beanies which will be sent to KOGO in Melbourne - an organisation that provides hand knitted items to the most vulnerable and disadvantaged in the community.
Kubirri residents enjoy festive month
December was a festive and fun-filled month for Kubirri Aged Care Centre residents.
The residents at the Centre, which is based in Mossman, were treated to a Christmas party before the big day itself and to round off the year.
Residents expressed their creativity and got into the Christmas spirit by decorating gingerbread houses with lollies and colourful icing. They were also served cake and an assortment of drinks at the party.
Seniors particularly loved the nostalgia of the Christmas traditions which included cracking bon-bons, no doubt reading the jokes inside and, of course, wearing colourful party hats.
Every week Newsport puts the spotlight on the seniors in our region - because there’s nothing that goes above our local golden agers. If you would like to be included in the seniors wrap-up, please contact [email protected].
