The Douglas Shire community once again demonstrated its remarkable spirit just days ago, coming together for a highly successful fundraising event in support of KIND (Kids in Need Donations).

With an impressive turnout of 92 people at Hughies in Mossman, the event raised just under $4000.

However, none of this would have been possible without the tireless dedication of a remarkable committee that tirelessly works to support these families.

It raises the question: What personally inspired them to invest their time and efforts in supporting KIND and its noble mission?

Ann-Marie Clark - Secretary/Family Liaison

“After experiencing the loss of our child to leukaemia at the age of 15, my husband and I received tremendous support from local organisations, including the Leukaemia Foundation.

“When my husband Peter and I retired, we felt the need to give back, so when KIND approached me to join the committee in 2012, we both gladly accepted.

“Volunteering with KIND is incredibly rewarding because I can empathise with the challenges parents face. As the parent liaison, I communicate with parents to understand their needs and provide meaningful assistance. This role has given me a sense of purpose.”

Danielle Bellero - President

“Even though we live in a little paradise up here, the reality is that it is a remote area with limited access to medical care for critically ill children.

“Children with life-threatening illnesses have to travel to Townsville or Brisbane, as these are the nearest hospitals equipped for treatment and surgeries.

“Assisting these families, where government support falls short, is both rewarding and essential for our community.

“One child's story deeply touched me. Diagnosed with stage four Hodgkin's Lymphoma at 14, his single mother faced financial and emotional hardships and we stepped in.

“As a passionate Outrigger canoe paddler we gave the boy a brand new paddle during his hospitalisation to encourage him to get better so he could paddle again.

“Despite his grave condition, his determination to survive for the sake of his family remained unwavering. Finally, at age 17, he entered remission and received the all-clear - definitely one of our happy stories.”

Nadine Jones - Vice President

“I joined the committee around 201. Having three healthy young children of my own at the time, I deeply empathised with families facing health challenges.

“Every child and family that comes to us touches my heart, how could they not. Just recently, I had the opportunity to reconnect with a family we helped.

“Their child was diagnosed with an illness before birth and is now 10 years old, thankfully in excellent health.”

Caroll Evans - Committee Member

“About 13 years ago, our friend’s newborn was diagnosed with Tuberous Sclerosis Complex.

“He required many trips to Brisbane to see specialists and endure operations. This was when KIND stepped in and helped ease their financial burdens.

“Not long after this, KIND asked my husband David to MC KIND’s Melbourne Cup Function. I helped out on the day as a volunteer and when I was asked to join the KIND committee I didn't hesitate.

“I have always admired what the KIND committee has done for our community - they truly are "locals helping locals!" .”

Charmaine Norris - Committee Member

“Being a member of KIND has raised my awareness of the profound challenges and difficulties faced by the children and families we serve. I am immensely thankful for the chance to provide assistance and support to them.

“In my time with KIND, I've witnessed countless touching moments. Despite the hardships families face, their gratitude for KIND's assistance is truly heartwarming.”
