A controversial local group that thwarted and played a pivotal role in a major future development from progressing at Mowbray has now launched a fresh appeal against a separate DA project following its majority approval at a recent Douglas Shire Council meeting.

Newsport has exclusively obtained a document which outlines 16 separate appellants including Douglas Shire Sustainability Group (DSSG) and Port Douglas Yacht Club who have, all collectively, lodged a Notice of Appeal to Brisbane’s Planning and Environment court.

The Notice of Appeal, stamped off by solicitors Mills Oakley on June 6, 2023 is in direct objection to Morris Aviation Australia’s now approved DA at 23-33 and 35-39 Port street.

Morris Aviation’s plans would see Nautilus Aviation operating from the new base and would include two new landing pads, refuelling infrastructure, hangers, an office, a reception area and caretakers’ accommodation.

“I am aware of the Notice of Appeal being lodged after its approval at the April ordinary meeting,” Deputy Mayor Lisa Scomazzon told Newsport.

“Everyone is entitled to their say and I completely respect the appellants putting forward their views regarding this specific DA development.”

Nautilus Aviation sought its new location having noted their current launch points next to Port Douglas cemetery and another next to the highway at Killaloe “present constraints for business efficiency”.

The newly approved site would allow Nautilus “with the necessary infrastructure to operate flights and service the local tourism market”.
