It remains a point of frustration for many local residents, businesses and tourists alike; the road closures during the annual Cairns Ironman on Sunday 18 June. Recognizing the significance of this issue, there is an urgent call for improved awareness.

With the event celebrating its 12th anniversary this year it will once again bring thousands of athletes, their supporters and families to the region from across Australia and around the world.

A spokesperson for the event emphasised the need for increased awareness about the road closures, as “the importance of informing people cannot be overstated”.

He continued to say that “these people make a significant contribution to the local community, with visitors injecting millions of dollars into the local economy”.

“Videos and images of the region are viewed across the world, highlighting the incredible beauty of Tropical North Queensland, encouraging tourists to travel not only for Ironman Cairns but for a holiday,” the spokesperson emphasised.

He added that the Ironman Cairns team works closely with event stakeholders to ensure that road closures are implemented smoothly and that “the impact on the local community is as minimal as possible”.

As such, the team recommends that people affected by road closures visit the event website to view all changed traffic conditions information and plan ahead for race day.

Road closures on Sunday 18 June include:

  • The Captain Cook Highway will be closed from Veivers Rd, Palm Cove, to Beor St, Craiglie (near Port Douglas), from 5.30am to 5.30pm.
  • The Cairns Esplanade, from Aplin St to Upward St, will be closed from 7am on Sunday 18 June until 6am on Monday 19 June. Council has extended the closure to undertake maintenance works.
  • Parts of Williams Esplanade and Cedar Rd, Palm Cove, will be closed from 4am to midday on Sunday 18 June.

Changed traffic conditions

Under changed traffic conditions, access to the Cairns Airport, Cairns beaches (Machans Beach, Holloways Beach, and Yorkeys Knob), Smithfield, and the northern beaches (Trinity Beach, Clifton Beach and Palm Cove), will remain at all times, however allow extra travel time for your journey as delays are expected.

If you need to head to the airport on June 18 between 5.30am and 5.30pm you are advised to give yourself plenty of time by taking the Mulligan and Kennedy Highways, via Kuranda, onto Smithfield and eventually to Cairns airport.
