Dear Editor,

This year, you’ve published a number of stories about water meters in the Douglas Shire.

Well, there is another aspect of the installation of smart water meters in Douglas Shire that needs wider exposure.

This issue involves ratepayers in gated housing estates that are (allegedly) being discriminated against by Douglas Shire Council.

This is because unlike all other ratepayers they not only have to pay for the supply of a smart meter but also bare the cost of installation, plus an application fee to Council with no explanation given as to why this group of ratepayers are being treated differently.

Council policy should be changed so that all ratepayers are treated equally.

The Mayor, Michael Kerr, is aware of the issue, but to date Council remains intransigent.

It might be illuminating to discover how many estates are subject to this (alleged) economic discrimination.

Sincerely,

Thomas Brown
