It’s plans include stunning underwater suites, a private island, 118 resort rooms and has been duly dubbed “The Ocean” but those likely to determine its future and whether it actually proceeds weren't made aware of it – until now.

When Newsport sought comment from Douglas Shire Councillors about the updated plans for the site they said they each knew little about it and instead found out – through the media.

“I look forward to further studying the proposal,” Cr Abigail Noli told Newsport.

“As a Councillor I believe that all proposals need to be assessed on their merits and should this come to Council I will give it the attention it requires to make fully informed decisions.

“I congratulate Mr Gurner on his enthusiasm for Douglas.”

The Gurner plans for “The Ocean” at 91-113 Davidson Road, Port Douglas comes after the withdrawal of their earlier submission to roll out a serviced apartments and private resident retreat.

They say the late change of mind comes after recent consultation with Douglas Shire Council in which they wanted to deliver a project more in line with the 2025 Daintree Destination tourism plan and the identifying need to see more quality four- and five-star accommodation options in Port Douglas.

Just days ago Gurner said the “The Ocean” plans among other things include world class hospitality bars and restaurants, a luxury beach club with a relaxation area and full hospitality offering akin to Les Palmiers in Saint Tropez.

It will also feature a kids play area and waterpark, a world class spa and wellness offering, 118 resort rooms: 59 lagoon-facing rooms, 46 suites that front the tropical gardens, seven courtyards that provide private access to the pool, and six underwater suites where aquatic life can be viewed through glass.

“In keeping with the tropical nature-led character of the serene Port Douglas landscape, over 30 percent of the 26,000sqm site will be covered in tropical landscaping, with 3,000sqm of shared outdoor amenity,” a spokesperson told Newsport.
