This weekend the thunderous gallop of horses and fashionable elegance of attendees will signal the return of spring racing. The Cairns Amateurs Carnival, a jewel in the Turf Club's crown, will feature a four-day Sapphire Jubilee program from September 7 to September 9, 2023.

For the 65th year in a row, this longstanding festival tradition continues to seamlessly blend exquisite cuisine, spring fashion, and horse racing.

Originally created to unite urban and rural communities, the inaugural 1959 Cairns Amateurs Carnival featured amateur riders from inland stations. While professional jockeys joined later, the amateur spirit continues to define the club's essence.

Today, the club's mission is to host an inclusive annual racing carnival that highlights Cairns and the tropical north's social, cultural, and commercial aspects.

With a total prize pool of $600,000 over two days of racing, it attracts top-tier horses, promising an exciting display of talent.

Reflecting on last year's festivities, Star Status emerged as the reigning champion, claiming not just the line honours but also the $150,000 Amateurs Cup in a triumphant performance. A significant milestone for Fred Wieland, marking his first Cairns Amateurs Cup victory.

New editions

David Goodman, President of the Cairns Amateurs Carnival, highlighted the event's enduring history spanning 65 years, marked by evolving traditions.

This year, notable changes include fresh venues and a reimagined layout, designed to elevate the sophistication of the Sapphire Jubilee carnival.

The focal point of this transformation is the remarkable St Hubert’s Pavilion, featuring crystal-clear glass walls to capture all the race day action at the heart of Cannon Park.

Attendees can also savour panoramic racetrack views from a two-story marquee, offering a change of scenery.

Fashion on the field

Aside from capturing the spectacular horse races, the highly anticipated Fashion on the Field competition adds an extra layer of glamour to the Cairns Amateurs Carnival.

An esteemed panel of judges, composed of racing style icons and fashion enthusiasts, will evaluate contestants based on criteria such as originality, style, and appropriateness, aiming to raise the region's racing fashion standards.

Guiding the fashion scene will be Carnival Ambassador Emma Scodellaro, "Gentleman of the Day" Neil Carpenter, Melbourne's fashion icon Crystal Kimber, and Sydney milliner Kathryn Lee, the newest addition to the judging panel.

Mr Goodman noted that millinery plays a crucial role in enhancing Fashions on the Field looks.

“Kathryn Lee’s presence on the judging panel ensures contestants' efforts in crafting their hats or fascinators and selecting the perfect pieces for their outfits will be appreciated by Kathryn’s trained eye,” Mr Goodman said.

According to Mr Goodman, participants in the competition consistently bring a remarkably high level of style to the catwalk.

Emphasising the competition's significance, he stressed the importance of having judges who possess not only a passion for fashion but also the credentials and reputation necessary to inspire contestants while preserving the competition's integrity.

“Fashion is subjective, and having a diverse panel of experts ensures fair judgement and encourages contestants to express their individual styles,” Mr Goodman said.

Over the years, the Fashions on the Field competition has remained a cornerstone of the carnival's appeal. Recent enhancements include the introduction of the Fashions Precinct, featuring photo walls, fashion illustrations, and touch-up tents.

Additionally, the carnival now crowns a Carnival Champion, the ultimate Fashions on the Field winner, adding to the competition's prestige.

Sapphire Ball

On top of all the festivities, another key event, the Sapphire Ball, promises to be a black-tie extravaganza, showcasing the elegance and sophistication that defines Far North Queensland's social event of the year.

Mr Goodman expressed his fondness for this event, which has been revitalised and embraced by the next generation of racegoers.

“While I cherish numerous memories of the Cairns Amateurs Ball, spanning from the early 1990s at the Tobruk Pool to the present Eastern Events Lawn venue, one moment stands out,” he shared.

“In 2021 my son in law, Mitch, proposed to my eldest daughter, Marika, at the Ball. I was privileged to be part of this secret plan. The Racing Minister sent photos to the Premier and the evening's MC, who announced the proposal to the delighted Ball attendees, which received a resounding applause.”

Fashion High Tea

The Ladies Fashion High Tea, another cherished tradition, has surged in popularity, especially since its relocation to the Eastern Events Lawn, ensuring convenient and accessible attendance.

Mr Goodman said that fashion enthusiasts look forward to this event each year not only for the latest fashion trends but also to catch up with friends and family, it is a very social occasion.

In closing, Mr Goodman proudly noted that Cairns Amateurs has cultivated a well-deserved reputation for maintaining exceptionally high standards in the world of fashion, ensuring that each year's carnival is a memorable and glamorous affair.
