Douglas Shire residents encouraged to nominate local dads for Community Sports Dad of the Year
CELEBRATING DADS
The Douglas Shire community is encouraged to come together and celebrate the contributions of dedicated fathers by nominating them for the 2024 Community Sports Dad of the Year award. This national initiative shines a light on the unsung heroes who tirelessly support local sporting teams, making a significant impact in their communities.
From cheering on the sidelines to carpooling to games, coaching young athletes, and organising fundraising events for essential sporting equipment, the roles these dads play are invaluable.
With nominations open until 18 August, just before Father’s Day on Sunday, 1 September 2024, this is an opportune moment for residents to acknowledge the hard work and commitment of local fathers who make a difference.
This recognition not only celebrates individual fathers but also emphasises the importance of parental involvement and volunteerism in nurturing the next generation of athletes.
Last year’s award went to Greg McKervey from Cobar, NSW, highlighted for his unwavering dedication to mentoring young people through coaching, refereeing at games, and fostering the local Athletics and Triathlon scene.
McKervey’s own experience reflects the spirit of the award: “If you find something you love doing, then volunteering is not work. It can be fun and rewarding. I just enjoy coaching and seeing our two clubs thrive, that’s all that I ask for!”
Nominations are now open and will close at midnight on 18 August 2024. To nominate a deserving community sports dad, residents should submit 100 words explaining why their nominee should win.
The award winner will receive an impressive Philips male grooming pack valued at over $1,000, as well as a $5,000 voucher to Rebel Sports, which can be utilised to purchase new clothing or equipment for their chosen community sports club.
