Palm Cove sees tourism revival under leadership of new tourism chief Matthew Cork
VISIONARY LEADERSHIP

Palm Cove is experiencing a tourism revival thanks to its new President of Tourism, Matthew Cork. Committed to revitalising this coastal paradise, he is rallying the community to rejuvenate the town, a spirit that was evident during yesterday’s Tourism Palm Cove networking night at the Surf Club.
Newsport had the opportunity to speak with Mr Cork, and it was evident that he is deeply dedicated to Palm Cove.
Raised on the Gold Coast, Mr Cork’s journey has been anything but ordinary. His career in hospitality took him to Japan for six years, where he gained invaluable experience and insight into what makes a destination truly special.
When he returned to Australia, Palm Cove became his new adventure—a place where he saw endless possibilities.
“Well, let’s put my money where my mouth is,” he said with a determined smile, recalling the challenges he faced when he first took on the role a year ago.
“It was very hard at the beginning; tourism in Palm Cove had dropped to just 28 members,” he confessed.
But rather than being discouraged, Mr Cork saw it as a challenge worth tackling. His belief in Palm Cove’s potential as one of the world’s best destinations is unwavering, and he knows that the key to success lies in the community. “Community is the key,” he emphasised.
“If individuals work as individuals, we’re not going anywhere. But if we work together, tourism can grow by 600%.”
This mindset has guided Mr Cork’s efforts to revitalise tourism in Palm Cove. His priorities are clear: engage the community and boost destination marketing.
“We’re trying to get the name of Palm Cove up there,” he explained, highlighting his commitment to putting Palm Cove on the map.
Yesterday’s networking event showed the power of collaboration. Local business owners, residents, and tourism professionals came together to talk about Palm Cove's future.
The event also served as a showcase of what Palm Cove can offer as a premier destination for functions and events. With Mr Cork at the helm, there’s a renewed sense of optimism and purpose in the community. His passion for Palm Cove is infectious, and it’s driving real change.
“Palm Cove is coming alive again,” he said, beaming with pride. Under his leadership, the town is not just surviving—it’s thriving. The community’s support is growing, and so is the town’s reputation as a must-visit destination.
