Residents of South Mossman were shaken up last Sunday night by attempted break-ins at two nearby houses.

Loni Fitzpatrick, who lives near Roadhouse, Pringle Street, and Berzinski Street, was woken up at 4.43am last Sunday morning by her dog barking, signalling that something was wrong.

Upon checking the house Ms Fitzpatrick and her partner found the front door slightly ajar with a window unlocked. The intruders attempted to steal their two cars from the carport, leaving Ms Fitzpatrick’s car door open.

They took her partner’s car keys, which also included the house key and a gate FOB. “I suspect in the attempt to take my partner's car the gate opening has triggered the light and our dogs, spooking them,” Ms Fitzpatrick said. “It's unsettling knowing they still have access to our property.

“My partner did a lap around the area and noticed a group at the Ampol shortly after about 4.50am. We don’t have security camera footage so hoping someone around the area does.

"We have reported the incident to the police, who suspect a group involved in similar activities starting from Port and reaching Mossman."

The incident struck a chord with other residents in the area after Ms Fitzpatrick shared it in the local Facebook group.

One local recounted an attempted break-in at his house on Blain Street around 5.00am the same morning.

This isn't the first time Ms Fitzpatrick and her partner faced a break-in.

“I had someone enter my car within a week of moving to Mossman in 2022. Back then, without our gate, I was quite uneasy. Installing the gate was supposed to provide security and peace of mind. I thought our area was relatively safe, but the reality is anywhere can be targeted.”
