DOUGLAS DECIDES 24’ - Newsport election polls draws 3000 votes as Zammataro and Scomazzon finish top of the pops
POLL RESULTS


Two Separate Newsport polls have been flooded with more than 3000 votes with the final results providing an early indication has to who community members intend to vote for Councillor and Mayor when the local Government elections are held mid next month.
In the Councillor poll, which received 1701 votes, current sitting Councillor Roy Zammataro came out on top with 307 votes or 18% of the numbers, ahead of Michael Joseph and fellow sitting Councillor Abigail Noli who started slowly before storming home to finish third with 296 votes or 17% of the vote.
“It’s a good sign to have finished top in the poll, but I’m definitely not getting ahead of myself,” Cr Zammataro told Newsport.
“Like all candidates I have a lot of work to do to prepare for next month’s elections. The results are a good omen, but there is still lots of work to do.”
In further intrigue two new candidates, Bill Allison and Damian Meadows both polled well, which would give both confidence heading into polling day on March 16.
Bill secured 226 votes to finish fourth, while right behind with just 10 less votes, was local Police chief Damian Meadows on 216 votes.
Meantime, Lisa Scomazzon reaffirmed she’ll be the person to beat for the top job in the Douglas Shire after a comprehensive win as the preferred Mayoral candidate.
From 1423 votes Cr Scomazzon secured 867 votes or a staggering 61%, in front of main rival David Haratsis with 448 votes or 31% of the numbers. The final candidate to nominate their mayoral candidacy, Stacy Wilkinson, finished third with 108 votes or 8%.

Meantime, this year’s Councillor and Mayoral candidates attended a forum yesterday in Port Douglas to outline their credentials and policies ahead of the elections.
The usual topics water, roads, cost of living, lack of recreational facilities, and the failure of the recovery mission post Jasper and floods were discussed.
