IN PICTURES: Baby croc does not survive road crossing
Shire wildlife
A baby crocodile has been found dead in the middle of a Cooya Beach road by a Newsport reader.
The about 30-40cm croc was discovered on Bonnie Doon Road, the reader said.
Saltwater crocodile breeding season goes from about September to April, with the eggs hatching about three months later.
Therefore, if this baby hatched sometime between December 2024 and July 2025, it would likely have been about 5-11 months old when it died.
Female crocs lay an average of about 50 eggs and look after their babies for up to three months after hatching, but only about 1 per cent survive to become adults, with many lost to predators and other accidents before they turn one.
