MILESTONE CELEBRATION

BUSINESS FEATURE
Mossman’s longest-standing social club is turning 80, and they’re marking the milestone with 10 weeks of prize draws, a $10,000 cash giveaway, and a full day of festivities on Sunday, August 31.
Not many places in the region carry a legacy as rich as Club Mossman.
Not many places in the region carry a legacy as rich as Club Mossman.
The original site was located on Johnson Road near the Mossman Showgrounds, on land provided by the Returned Sailors, Soldiers and Airmen Imperial League of Australia (RSSAILA).
With nothing more than a small cottage and a patch of overgrown land, members came together to clear the site and build the first bowling rinks by hand.
A 1996 article in the Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette recalled those early days:
“The land parcel was home to a cottage, which members remodelled into a clubhouse, using the kitchen as a bar, with servery windows cut into the walls.
“Those wanting drinks had to stand on a large log, which served as a makeshift step, and the area was shielded from the elements by tarpaulins.
As the years went on, the Club opened its doors to civilian members and quickly became a space for the wider community.
The original cottage was eventually relocated to Mango Park Road, and the second clubhouse now serves as the home of the Mossman Sharks Rugby League team.
The current clubhouse, opened in 1996, still stands proudly on the original site, now refreshed thanks to a recent multi-million-dollar renovation.
Today, Club Mossman remains a place where locals of all ages come together, for bowls, shared meals, and good company.
Arthur McDonald, a long-time member of 25 years, has strong ties to the Club, his father was also involved in its early days.
“They used to bowl while the cane fields were burning,” Arthur said with a laugh. “Must’ve been hot out there.”
Join in the celebrations and win big
To celebrate its 80th anniversary and thank members for being part of the journey, Club Mossman launched a 10-week promotion on Sunday, July 6, leading up to a full community celebration on Sunday, August 31.
